Scrim, a 17-pound rescue dog from New Orleans, became a local legend after repeatedly evading capture for months. Originally adopted in April, he escaped from his new family and roamed freely through the city. His most daring stunt came in October when he jumped out of a second-story window, a moment captured on video that gained widespread attention. Despite numerous attempts using nets and tranquilizers, Scrim managed to stay on the run, surviving against the odds in an urban environment.
Surviving the Elements and Eluding Capture
During his time on the loose, Scrim endured harsh weather conditions, including a hurricane and freezing temperatures. Volunteers dedicated themselves to tracking his movements, covering an extensive area of 57 square miles (148 square kilometers). Using wildlife surveillance cameras and a crowdsourced map, they documented sightings in hopes of cornering the elusive pup. His ability to survive in the wild, despite being a domesticated pet, earned him admiration and turned him into a folk hero.

Scrim was finally caught using a cat trap, bringing his long adventure to an end. Michelle Cheramie, the head of Zeus’ Rescues, led the mission to find and secure him. Cheramie, a passionate animal rescuer who found her calling after losing her home in Hurricane Katrina, was relieved to have Scrim back. After his capture, the scruffy dog was bathed and examined by a vet, who confirmed that he was in good health despite his rough time on the streets.
A Safe Haven for Scrim
Cheramie was determined to ensure that Scrim would never have to fend for himself again. Remembering his previous injuries, including lacerations and embedded small bullets, she emphasized that he needed safety, care, and a stable home. She carefully secured her home while waiting to transition Scrim to his permanent residence with a new family. To prevent future escapes, Scrim was equipped with a GPS collar and an AirTag tracking device.
After months of stress and effort, those who had searched tirelessly for Scrim gathered to celebrate his return. Volunteers who had spent nights tracking him came to visit, sharing stories of the long pursuit while Scrim relaxed on a couch. Cheramie, overjoyed to have him safe, expressed her happiness and gratitude. Before Scrim moves to his forever home, she planned to savor every moment with him, saying, “He’s going to sleep in bed with me tonight, and it’s going to be the most amazing thing.”
