If Santa Claus did not leave you the gift you craved most at Christmas, we may have discovered why: a couple of days ago, an elderly couple was arrested in Nebraska by the local police, who discovered that the wild amount of Christmas gifts they were carrying in his vehicle (and that they planned to deliver to his friends and family in Vermont and Boston) were actually 27 kilos of marijuana.
Patrick Jiron, 80, and Bárbara Jiron, 83, were on their way to the US East Coast from California to visit their families during the holidays when they were stopped by agents from York County, Nebraska. The agents, after perceiving a strong smell of cannabis and receiving consent for a thorough search, examined the car to discover marijuana and several containers of concentrated THC, with a value of USD $ 300,000, as explained by Lt. Paul Vrbka.
“They did not resist arrest, and they also explained that all marijuana were Christmas gifts for family and friends.”
Mr. Jiron faces charges for felonies for possession of marijuana with the intent to sell, and for lacking drug tax stamps for marijuana. Apparently, in Nebraska, the law requires marijuana traffickers to buy drug tax stamps to prove that the state’s relevant taxes have been paid. WTF.
The old man was released from jail although he must appear before the law in a short time, because the weed is not legal in Nebraska, neither for medical nor recreational uses. We are sorry for your family and friends, whose Christmas was probably a little sadder without this expected gift.
